Last night Memphis Metro once again played host to the SCIAA Middle School Volleyball Championship. In the Small Division semi-final game Bellevue faced off against Booker T. Washington and after winning fairly easily in the first set (25-14) BTW gave them quite a challenge in the second set almost causing the match to go to 3 sets. Despite playing very hard the ladies at BTW came up short and Bellevue moved on to the finals once again winning 26-24. On the other side of the bracket undefeated Sherwood had some stiff competition from Westside who after upsetting #2 STEAM Academy yesterday continued to prove themselves. The score stayed close throughout the match with Sherwood taking the first win 25-20. Westside fought back in the 2nd match winning 25-23 forcing a 3rd and final set. Both teams played hard, fighting for every point but the undefeated Sherwood managed to squeeze by a tough Westside team and move on to the finals after winning the 3rd set 15-12. The Final match featured Bellevue and Sherwood who coincidentally also met in last year’s final. Although Sherwood kept it close in both sets (26-24, 25-22) Bellevue kept hold of their champions title for the 3rd year in a row. Alyssa Conner and Ayanna King of Bellevue were named the co-MVPs of the game. Congratulations to Coach Dease and his 3 time SCIAA Volleyball Championship team!

Both schools will represent Memphis on Thursday, October 8th in the TMSAA West TN Small Sectional in Halls, TN. Sherwood plays Halls at 5pm and Bellevue will play Northview at 5:45.

The Large Division semi-final featured undefeated Hickory Ridge winning quite easily against Snowden 25-7 and 25-9. After the ladies at Hickory Ridge wrapped up their game they watched the rest of the match between Highland Oaks and Kate Bond play out. Highland Oaks kept the pressure on #1 Kate Bond the whole game almost causing an upset. In the first set Kate Bond won 25-22, and after trading points back and forth they managed to avoid a 3rd set by defeating Highland Oaks 28-26. Kate Bond, last year’s champion made it back to the finals to meet the awaiting Wildcats. The ladies at Hickory Ridge were fired up and ready to play winning the first set 25-20. Kate Bond fought back and took the second set 26-24 forcing a 3rd. After battling with Highland Oaks, Kate Bond may have just run out of energy as they were defeated 15-5 in the final set by the 2015 Volleyball Champion Hickory Ridge Wildcats. Congratulations to Coach Noel and her team on a well deserved championship. The MVP of the game was Shakira Stevenson.

The Kodiaks and Wildcats have oneĀ  more challenge as they play in the TMSAA West TN Large Sectional on Thursday, October 8th in Brighton. Kate Bond will play Collierville in the 5pm game followed by Hickory Ridge against Brighton at 5:45.

This was by far one of the most competitive years in middle school volleyball. Good luck to all those schools playing in the Sectional and congratulations to all of the teams who made this year’s tournament. Special mention to Jeter and Mt. Pisgah who despite not making the tournament both teams had a very successful first year playing in the SCIAA.
